I love using debate for assignments and as an assessment strategy.  In classroom debates, students are asked to not only to know the information but to dig deeper into the value of an idea over their opponents. This is particularly challenging for students who are taking a side that is in opposition to the status quo, providing an excellent opportunity for gifted students to push themselves. Learning to view the world through other people’s eyes and perspectives is a valuable life skill that healthy debates foster students to develop.
