Digital Citizenship: Digital Security

We as teachers need to understand, teach our students about and participate in Digital Citizenship. So what is Digital Citizenship? I am going to cover the nine elements of Digital Citizenship over several posts, check out the posts on Digital Access, Commerce, Communication, Literacy, Etiquette, Law, Rights & Responsibilities, and Health & Wellness.

Digital Security (self-protection) is “electronic precautions to guarantee safety”(Ribble, 2011). Just like we lock up our cars and homes to safeguard our physical belongings we must do the same for our digital world. This includes but is not limited to virus protection, data backups, and surge protection. The responsibility to protect our information from others ultimately rests on our own shoulders.
